Should You Get Domestically or Import an SWD?

Since there are not many Spanish Water Dog (SWD) breeders in the United States, many people choose to import a SWD. There are many countries who are breeding SWDs including Spain, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Whether you purchase a dog here or overseas the most important thing is to choose a reputable breeder. You should make sure that you deal directly with the breeder.  Ask the same questions that you would of any breeder.  See "Before You Get a SWD". Make sure that the breeders have the appropriate health clearances and ask to see documentation.  Overseas breeders should be performing the same health clearances that we do in the United States, although they have different health registries.
Domestic registration papers are AKC FSS (Foundation Stock Services) and UKC (United Kennel Club). Imported registration papers are through the FCI (Federation Cynologique International). You may register your puppy with AKC by providing the registration from the breeder and a three generation pedigree.

The cost is comparable especially when adding in shipping charges and exchange rates. If you are purchasing overseas, ask about the shipping process. How long will the puppy be in the crate? How many stops will he make? Will he be traveling alone? Another option when purchasing overseas is to go and pick up the puppy yourself. This is an advantage as you will be able to meet the breeder, see the kennels, and see the puppy before you purchase. Many airlines allow small animals in the cabin and you would be able to bring the puppy with you on the plane in a carrier. This might be less traumatic than shipping a puppy alone.

Do not just purchase a puppy off the Internet. Purchasing a puppy is a 10-15 year committment. Take your time, do your research, and only purchase from a breeder that you feel comfortable with.
