CoursingCAT: The big course!
The Coursing Ability Test (CAT) is measuring the dog’s prey drive and is a wonderful way to let the dogs run and have fun “chasing the bunnies”. In a CAT dogs will chase an artificial lure on a 600-yard course that includes changes in direction. Dogs run individually and are not required to be muzzled. This is a pass/fail event and dogs that complete the course in less than 2 minutes will earn a qualifying leg. Dogs are disqualified if they fail to follow the lure, foul the course or do not complete the course in the allotted time. Dogs earn the Coursing Ability (CA) title after completing three qualifying runs under at least two different judges. After a dog completes 10 qualifying runs the Coursing Ability Advanced (CAA) title is awarded to the dog. The Coursing Ability Advanced (CAX) title is awarded to dogs earning 25 qualifying runs. Fast CATFastCAT: The dash!
Did you ever wonder how fast your dog is compared to people or other animals? In the Fast Coursing Ability Test (Fast CAT) dogs run a timed 100-yard course chasing an artificial lure. This tests prey drive and provides a way to determine the absolute speed. While the Fast CAT is a pass/fail test dogs earn points toward titles based on their speed. Dogs are also ranked within the breed from fastest to slowest for each calendar year and for the dog’s lifetime fastest three runs. Dogs are given a 10 foot start to get up to speed and run a 100-yard course after the lure and then in the catch pen they can “get the lure” before leaving the course. The dog’s time to run the course is converted to miles per hour and the dog earns points toward the Fast CAT titles based on the speed. To account for differences in size dogs are grouped into three sizes (under 14’; 14 to under 18”; 18” and above) and handicaps of 2.0, 1.5 and 1.0 are given to the respective groups. When a dog earns 150 points the BCAT title is awarded. Dogs with the DCAT have earned 500 points and the FCAT is earned after the dog reaches 1000 points. For every 500 points after the FCAT a number is added to the FCAT to indicate the number of points earned.
