First SWD awarded a Tracking Title!
2020 TD - Vivaracho Explocion, Kathy Fish |
TrackingSpanish Water Dogs have great noses. All dogs have a keen sense of smell, nearly 100,000 times stronger than in humans. All breeds have the same number of olfactary receptors. What sets one breed over another for "nosiness" are the other physical and mental characteristics of the breed. For the SWD, it's their ability to concentrate on the task at hand.
Traditionally, the SWD would have used its nose to track fowl and game, injured or lost animals, or find its way back to his shepherd while in the field. Modernly, SWDs are trained in Search and Rescue, cadaver search, bomb detection and drug detection. The sport of Tracking involves setting a scent track for a dog to follow and can range from simple tracks to quite long, laborious tracks with many turns through open country. Generally, dogs are ground-scenting in this AKC sport. To date, Tracking is wide open for the first SWD titles! |
