Hips: OFA and PennHIP

Hip Testing is required for a CHIC number. In North America, there are two testing methods: OFA (Orthopedica Foundation for Animals) and PennHIP. Xrays are required for both, but the similarities end there.

• Qualitative ​(reviewed by 3 veterinarians)
• Formation of ball and socket
• Depth of ball in socket
• Signs of degenerative joint disease

• Quantitative
• Measurement of joint laxity
• ​Signs of degenerative joint disease

Who can take the Xrays:​

Veterianarian
(Note: look for someone with experience!)

Veterinarians certified through PennHIP seminar
