Tests for Genetic Diseases
A number of genetic disorders have been identified in Spanish Water Dogs. A list of required testing can be found here. In order to receive a CHIC number dogs must be DNA tested. These tests can be completed on a dog of any age and are most often accomplished using a buccal (cheek) swab that is sent to an approved testing lab (see the table below). Owners and/or breeders submit a buccal (cheek) swab from each dog to one of the approved labs. The lab then sends a certificate for each dog (often electronic) and a copy of the certificate, the appropriate OFA form (https://www.ofa.org/application-forms) and payment are sent to OFA.
